IN MEMORIAM

AFI 015.jpg

The Staff of Akron Family Institute deeply regrets the passing of Steven E. Perkins on December 12, 2015.

Dr. Perkins, a member and past president of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, began the family systems program at The University of Akron, which continues today. He instituted and supervised a family therapy program at Edwin Shaw Hospital for their Adolescent Addiction program in 1980.

In 1984, Dr. Perkins left the University of Akron but continued as an adjunct professor at Walsh University and Neoucom. He then began Akron Family Institute, a private practice specializing in relationship therapy and systems work. Akron Family Institute is now one of the largest practices in Ohio, and Dr. Perkins continues to be recognized as a major contributor to the mental health of this community.

Dr. Perkins was a mentor and inspiration to those who interacted with him as staff, and as clients. Akron Family Institute is one of his legacies and will carry on in his memory. He is warmly remembered by those whose lives he touched and we will miss his kindness and guidance deeply.
