Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder
It is estimated that 2 to 4 percent of all children display characteristics of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In fact, this problem is so pervasive that it comprises the largest referral group to child guidance centers. The ADHD syndrome is characterized by:
Children with ADHD have significant problems in the school setting where they must employ sustained attention and self-management. Often they do not perform up to their academic potential and both parents and teachers may believe that these children are purposefully disrespectful and uncooperative. In fact, they are often unable to cope with the demands of their environment and thus cannot control their behavior. The assessment data, diagnostic impression, and a comprehensive treatment plan should be shared with the parents in an interpretive conference and by letter or telephone with the referring professional and other appropriate treatment providers.
